OUR HISTORY
Kalimna Estate, described more than a century ago
Kalimna Estate’s character was being celebrated more than a century ago.
On Wednesday, 5 February 1902, The Maitland Daily Mercury published a detailed description of the Paterson residence of Mr. Sid. Brown in its “District News” section on page 2.
The article described the home as a “large, imposing one-storied cottage”, built of brick on concrete foundations resting upon solid natural rock and roofed with corrugated galvanised iron.
Its position was also noted, with the residence standing on a slight rise between Paterson Bridge and the village, commanding an extensive view across the surrounding countryside.
The architecture was described as a “free treatment of Italian”, with decorated gables, cemented cornices, pediments, string courses, elliptical ventilated windows and wide verandahs extending almost entirely around the house. Ornamental bay windows, curved projecting roofs and detailed cement work added further character to the residence.
Inside, the home is comprised of five large and lofty principal rooms, together with an office, bathroom, pantry, servants’ room, kitchen and laundry. Pressed metal ceilings, decorative cornices, archways and generous halls reflected the craftsmanship and attention to detail throughout the property.
More than 120 years later, many of the features celebrated in that 1902 description remain part of what gives Kalimna Estate its distinctive character — its architecture, sweeping verandahs, elevated outlook and connection to the history of Paterson.

OUR JOURNEY
From our beginnings to today
On 5 February 1902, the Maitland Daily Mercury published a detailed account of the newly completed residence of John Sidney and Elsie Muriel Brown. The home was described as a large, imposing brick residence, positioned on a rise overlooking the surrounding countryside and Paterson Valley.
Its architecture reflected an Italianate influence, with decorated gables, cement detailing, bay windows and wide verandahs extending around much of the home. Inside, generous rooms, pressed metal ceilings, decorative cornices and broad hallways showcased the craftsmanship of the period.
In the decades that followed, Kalimna evolved with the families who called it home. From 1949, the property operated as a working dairy farm under Ronald Brown and his family, continuing this agricultural chapter until 1970.
That same year, Terry and Margaret Hallinan purchased Kalimna and made the historic homestead their family home, beginning another important chapter in the estate’s story.
Today, many of the features recognised more than a century ago remain central to Kalimna’s character. Now carefully shared with a new generation, Kalimna Estate welcomes guests to stay, celebrate and create their own memories within a property shaped by more than a century of history.
